Frontier Annual Meeting Adventure

While the 2011 Frontier Capital Annual Meeting was a success, I am more inclined to share with you the adventurous side of the meeting versus the business side.

This year we took the crew back to the U.S. National Whitewater Center outside Charlotte. No we did not white water raft. We embarked on a new terrain – Land (and Air)! Canyon Crossing , Rock Climbing and Mega Jump to be specific. Now, I did hear some people downplaying the challange but by the end of the day most of them had changed their tune.

Teams were divided up by colored bandanas. First, was the Rock Wall Climbing competition. Yes… I said competition. If you don’t know anything about us yet, EVERYTHING that requires some sort of athletic skill is turned into a competition. Place your bets people!

Second was the Mega Jump. No athletic skill involved here but it was described as a “controlled” free fall. I’m not sure how a 46 foot fall can be completely controlled. Do you? We had one guy decide it was not for him. Only one person squealed (that would be me and yes, I was scared). One guy, who I will not name decided to go last because I believe he had to mentally psych himself up for the jump as he is not particularly fond of heights. And another member of the team that somehow did the jump but decided her backside would be better to land on than her feet.

Our last adventure of the day was Canyon Crossing. This is where it happened folks. There is an old story about a ship Captain who on the day of battle told his right hand man to go get him his red shirt to wear. After the battle was over and they had won he turned to his Captain and said “why did you need to wear the red shirt?” The Captain explained that should he get injured or shot during battle and started bleeding, the crew would not know, as they would not see the blood on the red shirt and they would stay true to the fight and continue on. Well, in that spirit I must say that for Canyon Crossing most everyone should have worn brown shorts!

I am not kidding when I say that I truly believe some praying was done out there and some language beyond PG might have surfaced as well. Those were not rope bridges. It was simply a single rope between trees that had a variety of ways to hold on for dear life. We had people that jiggled and shook with panic. Some froze and got stuck between tree platforms. [Lesson Learned: You never see a tight rope walker stop completely do you? There is a reason for this.] We even had a few people fall off the rope and had issues getting back up. The course ends with a 250 feet zip line in which one LP decided to do some circus like feats. At the end, one CEO said “I’m not going to lie to you, that was intense.”

So the day ended with beers to celebrate and everyone laughed over some story of the day. Another Frontier Adventure in the books. Thanks to everyone that joined us this year and we look forward to challenging you again next year.
